Some tunes are timeless classics, like Dire Straits’ Sultans of Swing. Mark Knopfler’s smooth playing will keep this song on playlists for many more decades. A Musitronics Dan Armstrong Orange Squeezer compressor was used to help get that smooth tone. There aren’t many effects that could be simpler. The only control was an on/off switch. Many players probably had their Orange Squeezer modified. It came in an enclosure with a built-in jack that made it a little inconvenient to use.
Our Sultan of Squeeze compressor compares to the Orange Squeezer, but comes in a super-convenient rack module format, of course. We also added a very simple Level control so you can dial in unity gain or a boost. Otherwise we stay true to the original design. While primarily for guitar, you can get it with a couple of minor mods to make it work great for bass, too. Our Sultan costs much less than an original Musitronics version of the effect, so you can get your smooth groove going.
